 Sun Tips
Whenever you are travelling to a sunny destination, be sure to check the weather forecast and take special note of the UV Index for that destination. If you will be going to the Caribbean, chances are you will be closer to the equator and the sun's rays are much hotter meaning you burn quicker than if you are somewhere in Europe. Make sure to bring a sunblock with a minimum SPF30 (I recommend SPF45). This will protect you if the UV index causes you to burn in 15 minutes.

  1. Biodegradable, organic sunscreen - if you will be going snorkelling and exploring the beauty of a delicate coral reef, then you must only use a sunscreen that is biodegradable as coral are very sensitive and the synthetic chemicals found in most sunscreens/sunblocks has proven to be detrimental when the coral reef is exposed to even trace amounts.

    • You can purchase organic sunscreen from a health food store. If necessary and you know you will be in the water for a short period of time, it is best to not wear any sunblock or sunscreen - for diving or snorkeling, you can wear long sleeved scuba gear.

  2. Hat

  3. Sunglasses

  4. Minimize your exposure to the sun by alternating going swimming to cool off your body and staying in the shade under an umbrella (rather than constant sun exposure). Try not to stay in the sun for longer than 1 hour at a time. Your body needs to cool off when it's really sunny, hot, and humid - so a nice dip in the sea is the best and is so refreshing!

  5. Keep well hydrated - this does not include alcohol beverages if you are basking in the sun - lots of water and even juice to replenish any electrolytes lost from perspiring.
