New Students
New to SunKissed Yoga?
Are you preparing for your first SunKissed Yoga Class?
Here are some tips you may want to know.
CLOTHING
Wear form-fitting clothing, preferably something you feel comfortable sweating in. (Sometimes loose-fitting clothing like t-shirts can flip over when doing inverted poses.) Bring a towel, yoga mat, and bottle of water.
ARRIVAL
Arrive 15 minutes prior to your scheduled class time. If you arrive 5 minutes prior we will not have time to complete the registration. Our lobby is very welcoming, a great area to just sit back and chill before your SunKissed Yoga class. Please do your best to always arrive on time. If for some reason you are late, please knock on the main studio door and wait. The teacher will open the door if possible, and at a reasonable time during lesson. Your fellow yogis appreciate your punctuality very much so please respect their time.
Kindly turn off your mobile phones and leave your bags in the designated area, out of the way of the yoga practice.
DURING CLASS
Follow along as best as you can. Listen to your body, focus on your breath. We practice class in silence, there is no talking amongst the students during class. The teacher leads you into and out of each posture through verbal instruction. Focus on yourself in the mirror. If you are new and not sure what to do, it's okay to look around at your fellow students. You may want to take the second or third row to watch the more experienced students in the front row.
If you feel like you need a break, listen to your body. You may sit on your heels or even lie on the floor (take Child's Pose-Balasana) and breathe. It is very important to stay in the room.
BREATH
During the entire practice, the inhale and exhale is through the nose not the mouth - so try your best to adhere to this practice, although allergies and sinus issues may make that difficult. There is an old yogic saying that states: "Breathing is through the nose, eating is through the mouth." As your practice improves, your breaths will become longer, slower, and more controlled.
WATER
Please come to class well hydrated, and try to drink water 30 minutes prior to yoga practice. It is good to drink one glass of water every hour to keep your body well hydrated. Another good habit is one large glass of water first thing in the morning. Typically during my practice, I reframe from drinking water because it takes a lot of energy to digest the water and it takes away from my focus, and you want to remain attentive during the practice. Keep hydrated before class and drink as much water as you'd like to after.
NOTE: During class, if you need to drink water that is okay but only as needed and drink small sips between postures and not during a posture so that others around may continue their concentration.
SWEAT
View the sweat as your body's natural air conditioning. Allow your body to sweat freely, without the need to wipe. Sweating is good for you. For your convenience, you may have a towel nearby your mat, sweat wristbands and hand-grip gloves.
MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL -- Enjoy Yourself!!
This is your "me" time. It is the time to re-connect, re-energize, and relax. Yoga means union. Yoga brings union of body, mind, and spirit. It is the moment to unify our ego-driven selves with our higher selves. Allow the worries to drift for those 60 minutes of class. The studio space is a place for you to enjoy, challenge yourself, and then relax completely. You will see the benefit of having a long Savasana (5-10 minutes minimum) at the end of class - all the challenges of the poses done are brought to fruition during this state of relaxation, letting go.
We hope to meet you at our SunKissed Yoga designated studio space very soon!
NAMASTE.
